Threads of Community: A Cozy Conversation with Mimi’s World

There’s a special kind of magic in the way creative communities form online—one friendly face at a time. When I first started going live on TikTok, I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure who would show up or if anyone would even stay. But then Mimi’s World popped into my lives, week after week, with encouragement, laughter, and genuine curiosity. She quickly became one of my very first supporters—someone who understood the nerves, the joy, and the little victories that come with sharing your craft out loud.

Now, it feels only right that Mimi is the very first creator I get to feature in this new Wondering.Waves interview series. Our story began with simple chats about yarn and crochet, but it grew into something much more—a friendship built on creativity, kindness, and a shared belief in the power of community. I’m so excited to share her journey, her wisdom, and her infectious energy with you all.

The Conversation with Mimi’s World

How did you first fall in love with crochet? What inspired you to pick up a hook for the very first time?

Mimi’s World shared,

“Well I come from a long line of crocheters. My grandmother, mother and aunt all crocheted my whole life. They totally inspired me to pick up the hook for the first time.
Also I was so young when I started. I was 9 yrs old and I would bug my aunt to make me Barbie clothes so I could play with them. After the 10th or so outfit she got frustrated and said here let me just show you how it’s done. I’ve been crocheting ever since.”

I absolutely loved hearing this—there’s just something so special about the way creativity gets passed down through generations, isn’t there? Mimi’s story instantly reminded me of my own family, where crocheting wasn’t just a craft, but a shared language of love, patience, and a little bit of playful persistence (I can just picture her aunt finally handing over the hook!). It’s amazing how those early moments—whether we’re sitting at a grandmother’s knee or pestering an aunt for yet another Barbie dress—can spark a lifelong passion.

What made you decide to start sharing your creations and hosting live sessions on TikTok? Was it scary at first?

Mimi shared,

“I honestly started posting and going live on TikTok just to see what would happen — and I didn’t expect it to turn into such a fun part of my life. Was I nervous? Totally. I think I stared at the ‘Go Live’ button for a solid 10 minutes the first time. But now, I look forward to every session!

I’ve always loved making things with my hands, and I wanted a space to connect with others who appreciate creativity. At first, going live was definitely scary — putting yourself out there always is. But the moment people started showing up, chatting, and encouraging me, I realized how special it could be. Now it feels like hanging out with friends who get it.”

Reading this, I couldn’t help but smile—because honestly, I’ve been there too. That first “Go Live” moment is a leap of faith, and it takes real courage to hit that button and let your creativity be seen. I remember my own nerves and the way my heart raced before those early sessions, wondering if anyone would show up (and feeling so grateful when Mimi did!). It’s amazing how quickly a digital space can start to feel like a circle of friends, all cheering each other on, stitch by stitch.

Can you share a favorite or unforgettable moment from one of your live sessions?

Mimi shared,

“A favorite unforgettable moment from one of my live sessions would have to be when I started getting the gifts, and the subscriptions. I have never in a million years would have thought I would meet such kind, amazing, supportive people on this app. The way they show up and show out for you is so amazing.”

Reading this, I felt such a sense of kinship. There’s something magical about realizing that your creativity—shared bravely and authentically—can draw in people who genuinely want to support and celebrate you. I remember the first time someone sent me a heartfelt message or showed up for my own lives; it’s a feeling that sticks with you, a reminder that the online world can be a truly welcoming place. The kindness and generosity of a creative community never fails to surprise me, and Mimi’s story is a beautiful example of how showing up as yourself can inspire others to do the same.

How do you stay inspired and creative, especially on tough days? Are there any rituals or routines that help you keep going?

Mimi shared,

“Honestly, some days are harder than others — especially when life feels heavy or overwhelming. But creativity has always been my safe space, so I try to show up for it even when I don’t feel 100%. And I lean on my community — the people who support me on live or through my content always help me remember why I started.

Sometimes that means just organizing my supplies, lighting a candle, or listening to music that lifts my mood. I remind myself that I don’t have to create something perfect — I just have to begin.”

Reading this, I felt such a sense of understanding. There are so many days when just showing up—lighting a candle, straightening up the yarn stash, or simply saying “hello” to my community—makes all the difference. I love how Mimi gives herself permission to begin, not to be perfect. That gentle reminder is something I try to carry with me, too: creativity isn’t about flawless results, but about finding comfort, connection, and a little spark of joy, even on the toughest days.

What’s your favorite thing about the crochet community online? How do you build connection with your followers and fellow makers?

Mimi shared,

“My favorite thing about the crochet community online is how incredibly supportive and welcoming it is. Whether you’re a beginner or have been crocheting for years, there’s always someone cheering you on, sharing tips, or just appreciating your work.

What I love most is the sense of belonging. The crochet community is full of people who just get it — the joy of finishing a project, the frustration of frogging a row, and the magic of turning yarn into something beautiful. I try to stay connected by going live, asking questions, and sharing my process. I want it to feel like a cozy group hangout, not just a post.

I build connection by being real with my followers — showing the wins and the mistakes. I love chatting during live sessions, replying to comments, and celebrating other makers’ work, too. It’s not just about the yarn — it’s about the people behind it.”

Reading this, I found myself nodding along. The online crochet world truly is like a big, cozy living room—full of encouragement, laughter, and a sense of belonging that’s hard to find anywhere else. I love how Mimi focuses on making her space feel welcoming and real, not just a highlight reel. It’s a reminder that our creative journeys are richer when we share not just our finished projects, but the messy, beautiful process (frogged rows and all!). For me, that sense of community is what makes every stitch more meaningful.

You’re so open about your journey—what’s helped you stay authentic, even when life gets messy?

Mimi shared,

“Life is messy, and I’ve found that trying to hide that only makes it harder. I stay authentic because I know there’s someone out there who might need to hear, ‘Hey, me too.’ Sharing the real parts — not just the polished moments — is how I stay connected to myself and to others. I remind myself that my story, as imperfect as it is, still has value. That keeps me grounded.

I’ve learned that showing up as my full self — especially on the hard days — is what builds real connection. People can feel when you’re being real. What helps me stay authentic is knowing that I don’t have to have it all figured out. I just have to show up, as I am. And honestly? The support I get back from the community makes it easier to keep being vulnerable.”

Reading this, I felt a wave of relief and recognition—because, truly, there’s so much power in simply showing up as you are. Mimi’s willingness to share the imperfect, unfiltered moments is exactly what makes her so relatable and inspiring. I’ve found the same in my own journey: the more I embrace the messy, real parts of life and creativity, the more genuine connection I find with others. It’s a reminder that our stories—flaws, struggles, and all—are what make us human, and that vulnerability is the heart of true community.

What advice would you give to someone nervous about sharing their creativity or going live for the first time?

Mimi shared,

“My advice would be: start small, and be kind to yourself. It’s okay to be nervous — we all were at first. But your creativity is worth sharing, and there’s someone out there who will connect with it. You don’t need to be perfect or have it all figured out. Just be you. The people who are meant to find your work will.

I totally get the nerves — I stared at the ‘go live’ button for ages before I finally tapped it. But once you take that first step, it gets easier. Talk like you’re chatting with a friend. Share what excites you about your work. People are drawn to realness, not perfection. And the best part? You’re in control — you can always ease in at your own pace.”

As I read this, I found myself nodding along. I remember the butterflies before my own first live, and how easy it is to believe you have to be “ready” or “perfect” before you start. Mimi’s words are the gentle nudge so many of us need: your story, your art, your voice—they matter, just as they are. And when you show up with kindness (for yourself and others), you create a space where everyone feels welcome to try, stumble, and grow.

What’s a project or moment you’re most proud of from your crochet journey?

Mimi shared,

“Honestly, my most proud project would have to be my Horror Dolls. While they were not perfect the first set I made, I love them and it was so hard at first but I didn’t give up and I’m really proud of myself for that.”

Three handmade crochet dolls inspired by classic horror movie characters, created by Mimi’s World. The dolls are detailed with colorful outfits and unique facial features, showcasing creative craftsmanship and personality.

Crochet meets classic horror! These dolls by Mimi’s World aren’t just spooky—they’re a labor of love, patience, and creative courage. 🖤🧶

Seeing her Horror Dolls made me smile—there’s so much personality and creativity packed into every stitch! I love that Mimi chose a project that challenged her and stuck with it, imperfections and all. That kind of persistence and self-pride is what makes handmade work so special. It’s a reminder that our proudest moments often come from pushing through the tough parts and celebrating progress, not just perfection.

Where can people find you and support your work?

Mimi laughed,

“I’m found in many places hahaha. My Facebook is under Aimee Michon (link).
My craft page is WhatMimiCreates (

My store page is Mimi’s Shoppe.

Confusing, right? I agree! Honestly, the easiest way is to go to my TikTok: @mimisworld1313.
You’ll find my Linktree in my profile with all the links you need to view my creations and get to know me more. 😊”

I love how Mimi makes it easy for everyone to connect, no matter what platform you prefer. She’s truly everywhere—just like the best kind of creative friend!
