A Morning on Virginia Beach: Honoring Service, Savoring the Moment

There’s something about the salty air of Virginia Beach that always feels like a fresh start. On this particular morning, anticipation buzzed beneath the overcast sky as I made my way across the sand. Today wasn’t just another day by the ocean—it was a celebration of commitment, pride, and the enduring bonds of service. I had the honor of witnessing CTR1 Welch’s re-enlistment ceremony, a milestone that would linger in my heart long after the waves had washed away our footprints.

CTR1 Welch decided to re-enlist in the US Navy, gathering friends and shipmates at the iconic King Neptune statue. Though the weather was chill and rainy, the location was perfect for this momentous occasion.

Under King Neptune’s Watchful Gaze: The Ceremony

The King Neptune statue—majestic, steadfast, a symbol of strength and guardianship—stood sentinel over the ceremony. Its presence felt almost like a blessing, a silent nod to the courage and resilience being honored that day. As the rhythmic lapping of waves underscored the moment, I found myself caught up in the gravity of the occasion. The air was thick with pride, unity, and a quiet reverence.

Family, friends, and fellow service members gathered close, their excitement and support palpable. Stories of sacrifice and service wove through the crowd, a living tapestry of shared experience. When CTR1 Welch stepped forward to take his oath, every word carried the weight of responsibility—and the promise of continued dedication.

The ceremony was more than a formality; it was a celebration of honor, sacrifice, and the deep bonds forged through service. Standing in the shadow of King Neptune, we were reminded that every re-enlistment is an act of courage—a choice to serve something greater than oneself, again and again.

In His Own Words: CTR1 Welch Reflects

After the ceremony, CTR1 Welch graciously shared his journey with me—a glimpse into the heart behind the uniform.

What inspired you to join the Navy?

“Honestly, I have always wanted to serve my country. That answer gets laughed at by some, but it’s true. I was 22 years old and between jobs when I enlisted, and I just knew it was ‘now or never’… something clicked when I visited a Navy recruiter.”

Biggest challenges faced?

“The distance from my family and the challenges of leading people. My father passed away in 2020, and I wish I’d had more time with him, but I’m grateful I was there at the end. Leading others is a big adjustment—but it’s also a privilege.”

Why re-enlist?

“I want to continue my journey. At this point, I feel pretty strongly that I’ll make a career out of the Navy. A healthy bonus helped too.”

How has the Navy changed your life?

“In every way. I grew up in a small town trailer park, but now I’ve seen many states and cities, Africa, and Europe… I’ve even drank liquor on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial!”

Advice for others?

“Do your research, know what jobs you’d be willing to sign up for, and be ready to make sacrifices. There’s no way anyone could tell you everything you’re going to go through. Be flexible and resilient.”

Celebrating Service: The After-Party at Chicks Oyster Bar

No military milestone is complete without a little camaraderie and good food. After the ceremony, our group gathered at Chicks Oyster Bar, nestled by Virginia Beach’s serene waters. The laughter, the clinking of glasses, and the easy conversation were a perfect counterpoint to the day’s solemnity.

Despite a minor hiccup with the oyster shots (to the surprise of some in our party!), the real standout was the Cherry Limeaid Crush—refreshing, sweet, and a perfect symbol of the lighthearted side of military life. As the sun set, the true spirit of camaraderie shone brightly. In these moments of joy and unity, we found balance between duty and downtime, service and celebration.

Reflections on a Day of Pride and Commitment

As the day faded and the horizon glowed soft and gold, I was filled with gratitude. This wasn’t just a ceremony—it was a living reminder of the sacrifices, joys, and deep bonds that define military life. Watching CTR1 Welch renew his oath under King Neptune’s gaze, surrounded by family and friends, I was reminded of the unbreakable spirit that binds us all.

Every story shared, every burst of laughter at Chicks, was a celebration of life and service—a reminder that the journey is as important as the destination. These are the moments that make the challenges worthwhile and the memories unforgettable.

A Parting Message: Embracing the Adventure of Service

As the celebration faded and we said our goodbyes, I carried with me a renewed admiration for those who choose this path. CTR1 Welch’s advice lingered:
“Embrace the adventure. The military will challenge you in ways you never expected, but it will also offer you opportunities to grow, to lead, and to be part of something more.”

To serve is to choose a life of courage, resilience, and unbreakable camaraderie. To all who wear the uniform, and to the families who stand beside them: your commitment inspires, your service unites, and your journey enriches us all.
